The Illusion of Cramming

Cramming creates the illusion of mastery because information feels fresh for a few hours. The problem is that a single massed exposure builds a weak, short-lived memory trace. By the time the exam arrives — or worse, by the time you need the knowledge in the next course — most of it is gone.

What the Research Shows

Decades of cognitive psychology research (Ebbinghaus, Cepeda, and many others) consistently find that spaced study produces dramatically better long-term retention than massed study for the same total study time. Spacing has also been shown to improve transfer — applying knowledge to new problems — not just recognition.

Why Cramming Still Feels Better

Cramming offers an emotional payoff: it feels intense and urgent, and a session of rapid recall makes you feel smart. Spaced repetition is quieter and more tedious in the moment. But the whole point of studying is later recall, and that is where spaced practice wins by a wide margin.

The Hybrid Approach That Works

Use spaced repetition as your daily baseline for vocabulary, facts, and formulas. Save intensive sessions for problem-solving and active practice. If you must cram before an exam, do it by hammering your SRS review queue rather than re-reading notes — at least the retrieval practice will leave something behind.
