How Many Flashcards Per Day Should You Review?

The right daily flashcard volume depends on your schedule and memory. Here is a practical framework for setting new-card and review limits that keep you consistent.
Why More Cards Is Not Better
The single biggest mistake new SRS users make is adding hundreds of new cards on day one. Every new card becomes future review load: over time, reviews accumulate roughly 3-5x your new-card rate. A burst of enthusiasm becomes an unmanageable mountain, and the app gets abandoned. Slow and steady wins.
A Practical Starting Point
For most people, 10-20 new cards per day with a 30-60 minute total review session is sustainable. If you have more time, 30 new cards works — but watch the load over the following week. The review queue is the real workload; new cards are just fuel. Uben's daily goals let you set the new-card and review caps independently, so you stay in control.
The Review:New Ratio
A healthy ratio is roughly 5-10 reviews for every new card. If you see 100 reviews waiting for 10 new cards, you added too many too fast. FSRS helps here because it spaces reviews adaptively, but you still need a sustainable daily cap. Consistency for six months beats intensity for two weeks.
Adjusting When Life Gets Busy
If you miss a few days, do not panic and do not try to catch up in one sitting. The forgetting curve is forgiving: just resume your normal daily limits and let the scheduler re-prioritize. Uben's emergency fallback even keeps your session usable when no cards are due, so a dead streak never has to become a dead habit.
